However, less interesting than Garcia's suspension—because let's face it, it would be more interesting if Garcia actually didn't get into trouble—is the fact that it took so long in the first place.
According to James Kratch of The Daily Gamecock, the suspension is as a result of something Garcia did in December when the Gamecocks played Auburn in the SEC Championship Game. Coach Spurrier stated it was something they "...were finally getting around to handling".
Honestly, waiting until now to announce Garcia's punishment only guarantees more unneeded publicity for your team. If you knew he was going to be punished, why not say as much shortly after the bowl game and not months after it—at least that way it's not a surprise.
Whatever Spurrier's intentions, he hopes the suspension will make Garcia a better man for his team as the season progresses. Honestly, it sounds to me like Garcia isn't Spurrier's only problem heading into an expectation-filled 2011.
I found this comment particularly interesting, "...it’s not fun not being on a team, from what I understand. Hopefully, all these guys will understand if they want to be on our team, just follow the few simple rules we have and everybody will be happy.
Sounds like they might be ripe for the SEC East picking in Columbia if Spurrier's players continue to get the big head.
We shall soon see.
